Ian Blair Fries, M.D. an orthopedic surgeon and a Senior FAA HIMS Aviation Medical Examiner practices in Vero Beach, Florida. His aeromedical practice focuses on Special Issuances for pilots with potentially disqualifying conditions. He assists pilots with alcohol and substance problems recover and return to the cockpit. He is an M.R.O., S.A.P. and teaches new HIMS AMEs at FAA HIMS courses.
He learned to fly while in the United States Air Force where he was a Flight Surgeon. He has over 7,000 hours as pilot-in-command and holds ATP, CFII, and Learjet type ratings. He has owned five TBM models over more than 20 years, currently flying a Daher TBM 960.
He is Chairman of the AOPA Board of Medical Advisors, aeromedical consultant for Teamsters Airline Division, and a board member of the Flying Musicians Association.
